This weekend, I ask all of you to remember all the missionaries as we observe World Mission Sunday – a day devoted to prayer and solidarity in favor of our brave brothers and sisters who are preaching the Gospel and witnessing to Jesus Christ’s love. We are all called to be missionaries in one way or another. That through our apostolic labour we become the “servants to all,” especially to those who are poor, sick or neglected. In our world today, our mission is not only to preach the Gospel but also to make disciples everywhere; at schools, hospitals and in our parishes. It means that as Church we are called to be of service – service that is rooted upon the desire to love and care for others.

Jesus makes it clear in our Gospel this weekend. His two disciples, James and John are seeking better seats at the banquet table of the Lord in heaven. These disciples didn’t quite know yet what was coming for them, and what the demands were. They simply wanted the rewards without knowing the requirements. Discipleship is difficult. It is no accident that the word disciple is really related to the word discipline. You need discipline to become a disciple. We claim to be disciples of Jesus. Do we have what it takes?

Let us pray that we may become a good disciple with the discipline to obey what Jesus wants us to be. The gifts of the Holy Spirit will help us in our pastoral care to all, not wealth or power or fame. Doing things fully for the Lord Jesus and not just with half-measures.

AMEN.

God Loves You!
