Thanks Be To God!

My dear brothers and sisters,

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ!

As we celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada, the Word of God invites us to pause and recognize how richly we have been blessed. Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; for us as Catholics, it is a way of life. The very word Eucharist means “thanksgiving.” Every time we gather at Mass, we come before the Lord with grateful hearts, offering Him our praise and receiving the greatest gift of all: Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life.

In today’s first reading, Isaiah speaks of a magnificent banquet prepared by the Lord for all peoples. God desires to gather His children to Himself, to wipe away every tear, destroy death, and bring His people into everlasting joy. This beautiful promise finds its fulfillment in Christ and points us toward the eternal banquet of heaven.

The Gospel presents us with another banquet – the wedding feast prepared by the King of His Son. The invitation is freely offered, yet some refuse to come. Others are too occupied with their daily affairs to recognize the importance of the invitation. How easily this can happen to us. Our work, responsibilities, worries, possessions, and even our busyness can sometimes leave little room for God.

St. Paul gives us the secret of a grateful Christian heart. He has learned to live in abundance and in need, trusting that “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” His peace does not depend upon what he possesses, but upon Christ who is always with him.

This Thanksgiving, let us therefore count not only the blessings on our tables, but also the blessings within our hearts. Let us thank God for our families, our parish community, our faith, the beauty of Canada, and the countless graces we often take for granted. And let our gratitude become charity. As we enjoy our meals, let us remember those who are hungry, lonely, grieving, or struggling. A truly thankful heart cannot remain indifferent to the needs of another.

May we gladly accept the Lord’s invitation, put on the garment of love, and come to His Eucharistic table with hearts full of thanksgiving. May God bless you and your families this Thanksgiving, and may our lives always proclaim: “Thanks be to God!” Amen. Happy Thanksgiving! God loves you!
