Ashes on your hair? What a year eh?

Ashes on your hair? What a year eh?

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Happy Family Day & Happy Valentine’s Day!

An article in the American Magazine (Jesuit Magazine) has an interesting title: ‘Churches are preparing for a (touch-free) pandemic Ash Wednesday’. The writer of the article remarks that “Ash Wednesday is one of the touchiest observances of the liturgical calendar – literally.”

This year, however, things will be different. Following the guideline from Rome, ashes will not be placed on the forehead, rather it will be sprinkled on the hair. The priest will not touch anyone. That is really touch-free Before the distribution of ashes, the priest will say these words only once to the hearing of everyone: ‘You are dust and unto dust you shall return’ or ‘Repent and believe the gospel.’ After that, he will proceed to administer the ashes to people without saying a word. We are to remain in our vehicles. What a year eh?

I will still place the ashes on your hair in the form of a cross as a reminder that we belong to Jesus and by His Cross, we have been redeemed. During the Sundays of Lent, I will be reflecting on these themes:

  • ‘Walk With Jesus, Our Living Hope,’ (Catholic School Theme for the year)
  • ‘Why Are We Here On Earth? (The purpose of our existence)’

May this Season of Lent lead us into a deeper relationship with Jesus, our living hope.

Wishing everyone a Grace-filled Lenten Season

Your brother, Fr. Obi
