Renewed by the Spirit

My dear sisters & brothers,

Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ!

As we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, the “Birthday of the Church,” we give thanks to God for the gift of the Holy Spirit poured out upon the Apostles and upon each one of us. Pentecost marks the conclusion of the Easter season, yet it is also the beginning of the Church’s mission to proclaim the Good News to all nations. The same Spirit that transformed the Apostles continues to guide, strengthen, and renew the Church today.

In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the disciples were gathered behind closed doors, fearful and uncertain about the future. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit descended upon them like a strong driving wind and tongues of fire. Their fear was changed into courage, their silence into joyful proclamation, and their weakness into strength. Filled with the Holy Spirit, they went forth boldly to preach the Gospel. Pentecost reminds us that whenever we feel discouraged, anxious, or afraid, the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom, courage, peace, and hope.

Saint Paul, in his First Letter to the Corinthians, reminds us that while there are different gifts and ministries, there is only one Spirit. Each person has been blessed with unique talents and charisms, not for personal recognition, but for the building up of the Body of Christ. Some are called to teach, others to serve, encourage, lead, pray, or offer hospitality. Every gift matters. Our parish becomes a living and vibrant community when we use our gifts with humility, generosity, and love for the common good.

In the Gospel, Jesus appears to His disciples and greets them with the words, “Peace be with you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon them and sends them forth as instruments of mercy, forgiveness, and healing. Many times, we also keep the doors of our hearts locked because of fear, disappointment, anxiety, or sin. Yet the Risen Jesus enters those very places with His peace and healing grace.

Let us pray for a renewed outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our families, parish, and community. May Mary, Mother of the Church, intercede for us so that we may become faithful disciples, joyful witnesses, and instruments of Jesus Christ’s peace and love. Come, Holy Spirit, renew the face of the earth. Amen. God Loves You!
