The Month of the Holy Rosary

Did You Know that October is the month of the Holy Rosary?

In 1206, our Blessed Mother, Mary gifted St. Dominic the Rosary as a mighty and powerful weapon against spiritual forces of darkness, personal sin and threats to our faith.  The prayers of the Rosary come from the Lord Himself, are found in Scripture and originate from the traditions of the Church.

Ascension Press points to these 10 benefits of praying the Rosary:

  1. It deepens our relationship with God;
  2. It strengthens our virtue and overcomes sin;
  3. It promotes peace and reduces stress;
  4. It increases our spiritual protection;
  5. It aids in our intercessory prayers;
  6. It encourages meditation and focus;
  7. It builds discipline and consistency in prayer;
  8. It unites us with the Church and the Saints;
  9. It draws us closer to the Eucharist;
  10. It leads to miracles and graces.

The Holy Rosary centres on the entire life of Jesus Christ. It also honours and contemplates Mary, as she is the Mother of God.

The devotion of the Rosary is widely practiced and prayed, and most Catholics today have a least one Rosary in their home (or in their pocket).  It is a combination of vocal and mental prayer, requiring us to really focus and contemplate on the prayers of the whole Rosary.  It is composed of two parts, that cannot be separated from each other – the meditation on the mysteries and the recitation of the prayers.

The Mysteries of the Rosary unite us to our Saviour.

The Joyful Mysteries (prayed on Mondays and Saturdays) call us to reflect on these truths:  The Annunciation (Luke 1:26-38), the Visitation (Luke 1:39-56), The Nativity (Luke 2:1-20), The Presentation in the Temple (Luke 2:22-40) and the Finding of the Child Jesus in the Temple (Luke 2:41-50).

The Sorrowful Mysteries (prayed on Tuesdays and Fridays) call us to reflect on these truths:  The Agony in the Garden (Matthew 26:36-45), the Scourging at the Pillar (John 19:1), the Crowning with Thorns (Matthew 27:29), the Carrying of the Cross (John 19:17), the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus (Luke 23:33-46).

The Glorious Mysteries (prayed on Wednesdays and Sundays) call us to reflect on these truths:  The Resurrection (Matthew 28:1-10), the Ascension (Luke 24:50-53), the Descent of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-13), the Assumption of Mary (Revelation 12:1 and Tradition), the Coronation of Mary Revelation 12:1 and Tradition).

The Luminous Mysteries (prayed on Thursdays) call us to reflect on these truths:  the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan (Matthew 3:13-17) , the Wedding in Cana John 2:1-12), the Proclamation of the Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14-15), the Transfiguration (Mattthew 17:1-8), the Institution of the Eucharist (Luke 22:14-20).

Through this powerful meditation we come to know Christ more intimately and deepen our understanding God’s great love for us.  Our praying of the Rosary helps us to stay focused in prayer, an invitation we are all called to.

The prayers of the Rosary are well known to us.  We simply begin with the Sign of Cross, profess our faith in the Creed, call upon God as Jesus taught us in the Lord’s Prayer, recite the simple words of Hail Mary, proclaim Glory to God, beg for forgiveness through the Fatima Prayer and end with Hail, Holy Queen.

R  ecite the prayers with humility
O  ffer your prayer to our Mother Mary
S tay focused on each Mystery
A sk for the strength to remain faithful in prayer
R eflect on the truths of each mystery
Y es Lord!  I believe you hear and answer my prayers

Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.  Amen.
