For more than two months, we have not received our Lord in the Eucharist. A number of people have expressed their sadness for having not been able to receive our Lord in the Eucharist. Many are looking forward to receiving Him again. There is a great desire to return to the Sacraments. Some people have mentioned that they were not practicing the faith in a deep way before but the Eucharistic fast has stirred something new in them. It is said that we don’t know the value of what we have until it is taken away or until we lose it.
Our spiritual hunger carries a message that it is God alone who can satisfy us. Our Catholic tradition tells us that God can do so even when the Eucharist is not available to us.
As Bishop Bolen said: “Our faith proclaims the holiness of many who never received the Eucharist. Think of Abraham, Moses, Ruth, Ester, Joseph. If God can make great saints of these men and women, imagine how much He will do with those who hunger for it now and will return to it with greater appreciation and deeper devotion.
What will it be like for me to receive Jesus again in the Eucharist after two months? My first Holy Communion since COVID-19, what will it be like?
Jesus, like the deer that yearns for a running stream, so is my soul yearning for you, my God! My soul thirsts for God the living God; when can I enter and see the face of God (Psalm 42:1)
