Welcome everyone to our Creed – our Profession of Faith. We’re going to take a closer look at the twelve articles of faith contained within it. The focus will be on the Apostles Creed, however I will be introducing into it the beautiful richness, expansions and clarifications that the Nicene Creed offers.
The Apostles Creed is a summary of the Apostles’ teachings and faith, and considered to be written from 150 AD. It is the ancient baptismal symbol of the Church of Rome and we still draw from it for our Baptism Rites to this very day. The Nicene Creed stems from the first two ecumenical Councils in 325 and 381. When professed, it is life-giving and brings us into communion with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and also with the whole Church.
I love this quote from the Catechism of the Church:
This Creed is the spiritual seal, our hearts’ mediation and an every-present guardian; it is, unquestionably, the treasure of our soul.
Catechism of the Church #1274
Our Creed is proclaimed every Sunday at the beginning of Mass. But what is it that I profess to believe? Faith is our response to God as he reveals Himself to us and as we examine each profession closer, we may find ourselves truly challenged to accept what we so easily recite. The Creed is divided into three parts:
- the first part speaks of the first divine Person
- the next part speaks of the second divine Person
- the final part speaks of the third divine Person
As we spend time examining the three parts, we will also be challenged to open ourselves to the wonder of creation, the mystery of our redemption and the origin and source of our sanctification.
We are drawn to a relationship with God, and the desire to truly know Him is written on our hearts. We can go through our every day and have a beautiful life. However, its true richness opens when we search for God and allow Him into our human heart.
Jesus was asked, “What is truth?” My prayer is that as we journey together and examine what we as Catholics, truly believe and profess, that this revelation will allow us to proclaim, “I Believe”. Here is the truth. For Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
I’m excited to be exploring the richness of this beautiful prayer with you as we journey together over the next 7 weeks. I’ll be posting one Article of Faith on Wednesdays and one on Fridays. I invite you to also tune in for our daily Mass and Adoration on those days from 9:00 am – 10:00 am.
