Guided by the Spirit

My brothers and sisters,

Praise to you Lord, Jesus Christ!

As we celebrate the Sixth Sunday of Easter, the Scriptures invite us to reflect on the presence of the Holy Spirit who strengthens, renews, and unites the Church. In the Acts of the Apostles we hear of Philip bringing the Gospel to Samaria, where many experienced healing, conversion, and “great joy.” The Apostles, Peter and John, then lay hands upon the newly baptized so they may receive the Holy Spirit. This moment reminds us that the Church is not built merely on human effort, but upon the living power of God working through the sacraments and the communion of believers.

This same Spirit continues to guide and sustain the Church today. In a special way, we ask for your prayers this week for all the priests and deacons of our diocese as we gather in Revelstoke, for our annual priest-deacon retreat. These days of silence, prayer, fraternity, and spiritual renewal are essential moments of grace. Priests and deacons carry many responsibilities in parish life, often tending to the spiritual and practical needs of others without much opportunity to rest quietly with the Lord. The retreat allows us to step away from daily demands and once again listen attentively to the voice of Christ Jesus, the “Master of the Vineyard.”

We are especially blessed this year to have Archbishop Emeritus Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto serving as our Retreat Master. Please pray that the Holy Spirit may renew all our priests and deacons with deeper joy, wisdom, and zeal for ministry. Pray also that our time together strengthens the bonds of brotherhood among us and renews our love for Christ and His people.

Saint Peter reminds us in today’s second reading to “always be ready to make your defence to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you.” Our witness to Jesus must always be marked by gentleness, reverence, and charity. In the Gospel, Jesus promises that He will not leave us orphaned but will send the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to remain with us forever.

May this Easter season renew in all of us a deeper trust in God’s abiding presence. May the Holy Spirit guide our parish, strengthen our priests & deacons, and help each of us live the Gospel with joyful and faithful hearts. Amen God Loves You!

~ Fr. Neil
